Labor March Supports Putting America Back to Work

Labor March Supports Putting America Back to Work

Media Advisory

Immediate Release                                                February 9, 2009

Who:   United Steelworkers and a coalition of unions and community
           groups in Granite City, Ill.

What:   A one-mile march with hundreds of people calling on
Congress to support legislation that puts Americans back
            to work.

When:  11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Where: Granite City, Ill.  The march begins at the mostly idled U.S.
Steel plant at 20th and Lee Ave., proceeds through downtown
Granite City and ends at the Amsted Rail foundry.

Why:    Our nation’s economic meltdown has resulted in more than
1,600 employees of U.S. Steel’s Granite City plant to be laid
off and Amsted Rail has announced the imminent layoff of
more than 600 employees.  These job losses are devastating
to the community and area residents and local businesses
are joining with millions of other people in the country calling
on our government to support a vibrant manufacturing sector.
