The Union Plus Program awards scholarships each year to member’s sons and daughters to help to further their education. Four of this year’s receipts are sons or daughters of USW members. One of the winners is from District 9, Jackie M. Robinson of Macon, Georgia. Jackie is the son of Jackie Robinson who is a member of USW Local 461 representing Armstrong World Industries in Macon, Georgia. Local 461 was a Direct Affiliated Local Union (DALU) of the AFL-CIO until 2004 when the members overwhelmingly voted to affiliate with the USW.
Recently completing his third year at Harvard University, Jackie has come a long way from his hometown of Macon, Georgia. Jackie says that workers throughout the world “would like a place to stand in life and leave an impact on the lives of others: a place where wages are fair and benefits are plentiful; a place of job security and opportunities for professional growth; a place where hard work is duly appreciated.”
Union Plus Scholarship awards are granted to students attending a two-year college, four-year college, graduate school or a recognized technical or trade school. Since 1992, Union Plus has awarded more than $2.4 million in scholarships to union families.
