USW Local 7894 Officer Credited With Rescuing Woman From Fire

David Smith. recording secretary of USW Local 7894 at Ball Container, was walking through his neighborhood last week and saw smoke and flames coming from a house.  Smith has been credited with saving the life of a 51-year-old mother.  He went to all doors and knocked but could hear no one.  He found her in her garage. Smith was told if he had not pulled her out when he did, she would not have made it -- the fire department said she probably had another minute to live, if that much.  Smith said the smoke was overwhelming. Once he found her, he had to go outside to get enough air to get back to her. Once he got her outside, a neighbor who is a RN assisted him.

David Smith is the type of person who does not like a lot of attention. The lady has been released from the hospital and he has talked to many of her family members.

A woman pulled from a fire at her home by a passerby early this morning remains in serious condition this afternoon at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Cheryl King, of 289 Old Thomas Bridge Road, was found on the floor of her garage, dragged away from the fire and taken by ambulance to the hospital.
David Smith, 31, was taking an early-morning walk near his home in Apple Ridge Subdivision when he noticed smoke billowing from King’s home. Smith managed to open a garage door and pull King out.
Firefighters found King semi-conscious and performed CPR at the scene.
