The 1st District 13 Conference was a huge success. More than 280 delegates attended representing more than 95 local unions were in attendance at this historic event. This was the first time that local unions from the former PACE and USWA throughout the District have had an opportunity to be together since the merger. At the end of the conference, District 13 solidarity was at an all time high.
During the conference the delegates heard from International President Leo W. Gerard, Director Mickey Breaux and many elected officials from around the District. There were education classes on FMLA, Labor Law, Rapid Response, PAC, and Political Mobilization.
Many delegates in attendance had never been to a District Conference before and although some were uncertain about what to expect, everyone left impressed by the experience. Delegates left the conference educated, energized, and ready to go back to their locals and work harder than before to mobilize their membership.
There were many resolutions passed at the conference but the one resolution that drew the most enthusiasm was the Education and Existence Fund resolution. The Education and Existence Fund or the E&E fund as it is commonly referred to, allows local unions to contribute on a per capita basis to the fund. In return when the local attends any District 13 educational event, the fund will pay for the registration fees, hotel room, meals, and materials. District 13 Education Coordinator Don Davies said “Local Unions have made use of this fund for 30 years with great success”
