The USW in Ohio - A Proud History

The United Steelworkers represents 850,000 active and retired members across the United States and Canada.  In Ohio our jurisdiction includes workers from the steel mills of the North Shore of Lake Erie to the brass producers in the far northwest corner of the State to the school district employees in Muskingum County to the utility workers in Cincinnati and the coke plant workers in Haverhill, the United Steelworkers Union has a proud and long-standing relationship with the 70,000 members it represents in Ohio.

Ohio's 200 year history of steel-making makes it a logical hub of many USW activities.  However, as times have changed, our union has adapted effectively to meet the needs and raise the standards of living of our members and retirees from a wide variety of workplaces in both the private and public sectors.  In addition, the USW has developed strategic alliances with various employers and organizations.  These efforts are designed to promote the quality of life in Ohio and across North America.  One example is our partnership with the Sierra Club, in which we have established the “Blue/Green Alliance”.  Our Blue/Green efforts promote fair trade, awareness of global warming and the creation of green jobs and environmental responsibility.

USW workers represent a wide variety of Ohio industry. Hospital employees at Akron General Medical Center, paper mill workers in Chillicothe, nuclear services workers in Piketon, oil refinery workers in Toledo as well as tire makers at Goodyear, Firestone and Cooper are Steelworkers, so are staff members at the Stark County Department of Job and Family Services.

We’re also proud to say we represent the steelworkers at ArcelorMittal, WCI, Timken, REP, US Steel, AK Steel and Esmark (Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel).

With its district office in Columbus, the USW is proud to represent such a wide variety of hardworking women and men in the state of Ohio and serves them from conveniently located sub-district offices throughout the state, including Canton, Warrensville Heights, Columbus and Lorain.
