Two District 10 Facilities Join USW
Nearly 100 workers in District 10 voted to join the USW in a pair of recent elections certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
The first election was at McKnight Cylinder in Madison, PA, just east of Pittsburgh. The 53 employees there voted by a more than four-to-one margin in favor of USW representation.
The second victory was for 33 workers at Cornell-Abraxas, a private institution near Erie, PA that works with troubled youth. A majority of voters there also opted to be represented by the Steelworkers.
"We’re happy to have these workers on board as the newest members of the United Steelworkers," said District 10 Director John DeFazio. "We’ll begin work almost immediately to get these workers a fair and sensible first contract."
DeFazio said the victories also show the diversity of today’s USW.
"More and more workers – no matter what occupation they hold - are beginning to realize that they need the support offered by a union," DeFazio said.
