PA Workers Say "Yes" to USW
City employees in Connellsville, Pa. now have union representation after voting in favor of the USW.
The newly organized workers are from the parks department, custodial and office staff.
"This is one of the last groups of city workers in Connellsville to organize," said USW District 10 Organizing Director Phil Ornot. "We also have the city authority workers – sewage and water – the street department and we have the workers from South Connellsville."
Ornot said he hopes to see the workers begin to bargain their first contract as soon as possible. He noted that state law requires all current benefits, wages and conditions of employment to remain in effect.
"I’m not voting for me but for the guy who comes after me," said parks employee George Kosisko. "It’s about job security. We just want to be treated fairly. I’m looking forward to getting a contract."
City employees first contacted the USW about representation in November 2003.
