District 7 Women of Steel Receive Recognition

The Women of Steel in southern Illinois have been very active in recent years in the fight against domestic violence through their financial support of the Phoenix Crisis Center in Granite City.  They have raised over $50,000 through their activities.

Joyce "Sweetpea" Hayden (LU 1899), Tom Gordon Jr., Norma Gaines (LU 68 / D-7 WOS Co-Coordinator)

This year, they chose "Susan G. Komen for the Cure" to benefit from their efforts.  When Mary Jo Ann Hollenbeck, the sister of WOS activist Joyce "Sweetpea" Hayden (LU 1899) succumbed to breast cancer, the group decided to remember her through a benefit.

Local businesses and individuals gave generously, and they netted $4,400 for the charity.  The members of Polish Hall, in Madison, IL generously donated their facility for the event. The WOS presented a plaque to Polish Hall President Tom Gordon Jr. in recognition of their long time support for women's issues.
