Michael Bolton began his career in 1976 in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he was a machine operator for Packaging Corporation of America (PCA). There he became active with the United Paperworkers International Union (UPIU), and in 1987, Michael became a union staff member.

He remained with UPIU’s successor union, the former Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy (PACE) International Union, and then with the merger with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) in 2005, Michael was appointed Sub-District Director of North Central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

On March 1, 2008, he was named the successor of now-Vice President Jon Geenen, and was appointed the Director of District 2 by the USW’s International Executive Board.

Throughout his career, Michael Bolton has served on various committees across the state of Wisconsin with the goal of improving and assisting in the lives of our members. From 1993-2008, Michael served on the North Central Wisconsin Labor Management Council; from 1995-2008, he served on the Wisconsin Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council; and from 2004-2008 he was a member of the Wisconsin Apprenticeship Advisory Council.

In 2008, he became a member of the AFL-CIO Midwest Region Affiliate Board, and serves on both the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Executive Board, and the Michigan AFL-CIO Executive Board. He also serves on the board of directors for the Economic Alliance of Michigan. In 2009, Bolton became the chair of the Northeast Wisconsin Area Labor Federation.

Michael Bolton has also been involved in multiple projects and groups on the issue of the environment. He has served as a member of the Forestry and Agriculture Work Group of the Governor’s Task Force on Global Warming, as well as the Lieutenant Governor’s Task Force to Increase Public Understanding on Global Warming. Since 2006, he has served as a member of the Wisconsin Council on Forestry.

Other projects he has been involved with include the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance and Habitat for Humanity.

Michael and his wife, Phyllis, live in Sherwood, Wisconsin. They have five children and two grandchildren.
