Fighting Toxic Trade

USW pushes for import safety
at 100 Congressional offices

"The China Toxin," a 9-foot long freight ship commanded by “Captain Grim Reaper” arrived in Livonia, Michigan, on January 16th.  The ship was purported to be carrying more toxic products from China for American Families.

The ship was part of a United Steelworkers demonstration at the office of Congressman Thaddeus McCotter. Members asked him to support the U.S. Food and Product Responsibility Act (S.2081), introduced in the Senate by Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and to be carried in the House by Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind.

This National Day of Action to Stop Toxic Trade event was only one of almost 100 events held across the United States by United Steelworkers. The union members and supporters were demanding that Congress take immediate action to protect Americans from the dangerous threat posed by the millions of lead-laced toys and other unsafe products infiltrating our country and by passing the U.S. Food and Product Responsibility Act (S.2081) and fixing broken trade policies.

In Livonia, Congressman McCotter was unavailable at the time but asked his representative to let the Steelworkers and their families know that he supported them on this issue and welcomed them back to discuss it when he returned.

Members of several Sub 2 locals joined with SOAR and other community activists to meet with the staff of Republican Congressman John Shimkus (IL-19) in Collinsville, IL.  They urged him to help eliminate the unsafe imports from China that have been flooding the market and the media.
