5th Annual “Evening with the Browns” Fundraiser

In early October, members of the United Steelworkers joined with the officers of the National College Players Association (NCPA) for our 5th annual “Evening with the Browns” fundraiser with players from the Cleveland Browns NFL football team.

More than 300 USW local union officers and members from the Cleveland area were in attendance to get autographs from eight of the Browns starters, take photos with them and have an overall great evening in support of a very worthy cause.

The Steelworkers have been assisting college athletes in their struggle to improve the lives of college athletes across the U.S.  The fundraiser was jointly hosted by USW Rapid Response Director, Tim Waters, District 1 Director, David McCall and former Browns all-pro defensive back and now NCPA Board Chairman, Daylon McCutcheon.  NCPA President and Founder Ramogi Huma and Vice President Ryan Roques – both former star players at UCLA attended the event.

Many NFL players are former members of the NCPA, including Browns quarterback Derek Anderson who was in attendance.  It is encouraging to see NFL players joining us to support college athletes in their fight against the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for fair treatment.  A similar event with NFL players from the Pittsburgh Steelers will be held in early December in a further effort to assist the NCPA.

Many of the issues the NCPA is fighting for are the same issues we struggle with every day, including healthcare, wages (scholarships) and a voice in determining their future.  The NCPA, formerly known as the College Athletes Coalition (CAC), is recognized as the single independent voice for college athletes and they are fiercely determined.  Though the giant NCAA has fought them at every turn, the NCPA has been successful with regards to a number of their key demands.
