John DeFazio was elected Director of District 10 in 2001. In 1970, John was elected president of USW Local 1843 —the youngest basic steel president ever. He was appointed to the USW staff and subsequently promoted to subdistrict director. He served as District 10 Civil Rights Coordinator and has developed extensive experience helping workers in financially troubled companies. DeFazio has serviced locals in steel, can, manufacturing, glass, health care, municipal workers, and service-industry workers. Besides his work with the union, DeFazio was elected to the newly created Allegheny County Council and served two years as its first president, representing 1.3 million people in the Pittsburgh area. He continues to serve on the council. He has also served as president of the Allegheny County Labor Council.
